The purpose of this publication is to expand regional awareness of the wide range of options for sustainable endeavor, and to promote new and ongoing innovation and collaboration. We also hope to encourage policy makers and government agencies to embrace and facilitate the innovations that link individuals and communities to a sustainable future.

What is a Good Example?

The case studies included in this publication have been selected for promoting environmental and community health through activities that enhance regional economic vitality. Or put another way, how they contribute to economic vitality in a manner consistent with environmental health and community well being.

The individuals, businesses and organizations highlighted are at the leading edge of sustainability efforts. They are working to actualize, create, define, and refine the concepts, tools and techniques needed to make a sustainable world a reality.

Too often the abstraction of definition occupies our minds, causing us to ignore or overlook the importance of practice. The goal of this publication is not to define sustainability, but to acknowledge good work, to celebrate good examples in practice.

A Reader's Guide

The case studies presented here are a snapshot of lives, businesses and organizations from around the region. Like a picture, these case studies don't presume to tell the whole story. They simply offer a glimpse of people hard at work. It is hoped that readers will find these case studies interesting and inspirational, and in the process will be motivated to support these endeavors and others like them in their own backyard.
